1. Toxicite aigue a l'egard de quinze organismes ArchiMer
Maggi, Pierre; Cossa, Daniel.
The acute toxicity of 5 anionic detergents towards 15 marine organisms is related in this study which indicates that fish are very susceptible while Crustacea are the most resistant animals. Phytoplankton and molluscs appear to have intermediate sensibility tothose syndets. The lethal concs of the 5 anionic detergents used in this experiences towards the most susceptible marine spp are near one mgm/l.

Cossa, Daniel; Maggi, Pierre.
In this research, biodegradation associated with evaluation of the variations of acute toxicity of 5 anionic detergents towards Anguilla anguilla is described. It appears that the process of anionic detergent biodegradation in sea water is similar to the results obtained by many authors working on fresh water. The experimentation shows 2 different kinds of behavior among the 5 anionic detergents tested: (a) the first category is composed of syndets, without aryl group in their formulation, which are promptly oxidized by bacteria and do not reveal variation of acute toxicity during their biodegradation; (b) the other group includes LAS; those syndets need a quite long bacterial acclimation. On the other hand, their toxicity is reduced whilst they are...

Vertical mercury profile in relation to arsenic, cadmium and copper at the eastern north-atlantic ices reference station ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Michel, Pierre; Noel, Joelle; Auger, Dominique.
Mercury (total mercury), arsenic, cadmium, copper and nutrient concentration profiles (fourteen depths) were obtained at the ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) reference station (46-degrees-N; 6-degrees-W) in 4 680 m of water in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Concentrations of mercury generally ranged from 0.4 to 10 pM. The main feature of the vertical mercury profile was a broad peak between 150 and 1 500 m. Examination of the mercury profile in relation to water mass structure and comparison with nutrient and other elemental distributions suggested that its shape results from a remobilization of mercury during mineralization of sinking organic detritus combined with its intense scavenging in deeper waters.

Idlafkih, Z.; Cossa, Daniel; Meybeck, M..
From january 1990 to may 1992, 70 samples have been taken on the River Seine at Poses (75 000 km2, the most downstream station, within a water quality pilot study. lnorganic pollutants (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) presented here have been sampled, pretreated and analysed in ultra-clean conditions to avoid any contamination. Dissolved levels are somewhat lower than early 80's survey : As = 990, Cd = 27, Hg = 3, Pb = 500, Cu = 1700, Zn = 9200 (in ng/l). The river pollution is more attested by contents in suspended matter : As = 8.5, Cd = 4.9, Hg = 1.2, Pb = 184, Cu = 174, Zn = 161 (in μ g/g). Metals are essentially linked to the particulate matter While arsenic is more present in dissolved fraction excepted during floods when TSS exceed 100 mg/l, and is...

Cossa, Daniel; Abarnou, Alain; Andral, Bruno; Bougrier, Serge; Buestel, Dominique; Claisse, Didier; Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stanisiere, Jean-yves.

Mercury transformations and exchanges in a high turbidity estuary: The role of organic matter and amorphous oxyhydroxides ArchiMer
Laurier, Fabien; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Breviere, Emily; Sarazin, G.
The speciation and partition of mercury in a macrotidal estuary (Seine estuary, France) was studied in order to explore the role of the high turbidity zone (HTZ) in mercury transfer to the adjacent coastal waters. Water and particles were analyzed to determine the concentrations of various mercury species, including monomethylmercury and the inorganic fraction. The exchangeable particulate mercury, which varies with salinity, and the mercury fraction associated with the amorphous oxyhydroxides were evaluated. The distribution of dissolved mercury species during early mixing suggests non-conservative behavior of organically bound mercury at the head of the estuary. Mercury in the particles covaried positively with suspended particulate matter concentrations...

Methylmercury formation in the anoxic waters of the Petit-Saut reservoir (French Guiana) and its spreading in the adjacent Sinnamary river ArchiMer
Coquery, M; Cossa, Daniel; Azemard, S; Peretyazhko, T; Charlet, L.
The present work was carried out on the hydroelectric reservoir Petit-Saut on the Sinnamary river in French Guiana. Measurements were performed during the wet and dry seasons along a longitudinal gradient, from upstream of the reservoir in two inflow rivers, to the Sinnamary estuary downstream of the dam. Gold extraction has led to a marked increase in suspended matter and total mercury (HgT) in one of the rivers. Dissolved monomethylmercury (MMHg) measured in surface waters were similar for both rivers: 0.03-0.05 ng l(-1) (1.0-1.7% of the dissolved HgT). These results indicate similar methylation efficiency and/or transfer of MMHg into the dissolved fraction of the water column, independently of the amounts of inorganic mercury transported. Dissolved MMHg...

Total-Hg and Pb-210 measurements in canopy and lake sediments at the pic Matecho, a pristine site in the tropical rainforest of French Guiana (South America) ArchiMer
Melieres, Ma; Pourchet, M; Cossa, Daniel; Charles-dominique, P; Gaucher, P.
We present results obtained from a pristine site of French Guiana (South America), at the Pic Matecho, a region far from gold mining activity. This area contains a small permanent lake, a rare situation in French Guiana. Tree canopy, soils and Lake Matecho sediments were analysed in total Hg and Pb-210. The annual deposit of litterfall is estimated at 40 mug (Hg)/m(2)/y. The top sediment content of 0.2 mug (Hg)/g indicates a large contribution of the atmospheric deposit. In sediment, the decrease of total Hg with depth is neither due to local human influence, nor to increase of atmospheric background during this century. It is attributed to remineralization of organic matter in the upper part of the sediment : the majority of the total Hg deposited at the...

Modeling trace metal accumulation in the mediterranean mussel, mytilus galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

Total mercury in the water column near the shelf edge of the European continental margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Cotte Krief, Marie-hélène; Mason, Robert P.; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distribution and the relative importance of processes that affect mercury distribution in the water column at the shelf edge of the Celtic Sea, on the western European continental margin. The water column, down to 4500 m, was sampled during two cruises, one in winter 1994 and the other in June 1995, on eight stations. Total mercury concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 9.37 pM with the extreme values in the first 200 m. The highly variable concentrations in the surface layers are attributed to intense atmospheric-sea water exchange processes. The low concentrations encountered in the shelf water prelude any significant influence of continental waters in this area. In the mixed layer, biological uptake and...

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

The monitoring programme of the ecological and ecotoxicological consequences of the "Erika" oil spill ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien; Le Moigne, Morgan; Flammarion, Patrick; Thybaud, Eric; Cossa, Daniel.
On December 11, 1999, Erika, an oil tanker flying the Maltese flag and loaded with 31 000 t of heavy fuel oil, was making its way from Dunkirk to Livorno when it encountered difficult weather conditions Southwest of the Brittany coast gale force winds 8 to 9 and 6 mwaves). On the morning of 12th December, the captain broadcast an SOS; his vessel was breaking in two, approximately 30 nautical miles to south of Penmarc'h Point (Fig. 1; Finistère, France). The fore section of the vessel sank during the night of the 12-13 December and the aft section was taken in tow on the morning December 13, but subsequently sank in the early afternoon. Both parts lay in 120 m of water and were located 10 km apart. Approximately, 19 000 t of heavy fuel oil were spilled into...
